Cable Hones Its EST Edge

From Jeff Baumgartner at Multichannel News: "Pay TV providers are looking to join the race to sell movies and TV shows through all-digital multiscreen storefronts, as retail distribution models shift away from physical DVDs and Blu-ray discs. And as Verizon Communications has already discovered with Flex View, an EST service the telco launched in 2010, pay TV operators have not just the foundation on which to build their digital video stores, but also a direct sales link to millions of customers." MSOs Prepared To Enter Gigabit Era

At a panel at the 2014 Cable Show, executives from top MSOs expressed their eagerness to begin using the Gigabit speeds which will be enabled by technologies such as DOCSIS 3.1. “You’ll see us being aggressive buying 3.1 product,” said Tony Werner, EVP and CTO at Comcast. Basic Cable Subscribers Love Movies

According to a recent report, subscribers to basic cable watched the most movies last year than in the previous two. "Cable networks are seeing the benefit of airing movies that get better non-prime time rating than some TV shows during the same time slots," Erick Brannon, senior analyst for television media at IHS said in a press release. Oddly, "Mrs. Doubtfire" was the most played movie of 2013. More on the report and the numbers from FierceCable.

CableLabs, Vendors Prepare To Solve Multicast Problem

A cable-optimized version of IP multicast has jumped to the forefront as a priority for the industry, and is a major initiative at CableLabs. In an update of R&D activity at the recent CableLabs winter conference in Atlanta, Matt Schmitt, Director for DOCSIS, and Jesus Lopez, Director of Certifications, said multicast was among the initiatives related to development of an all-IP cloud-based approach to delivering pay TV service. Content ingest, encoding, packaging and ways to support alternate content and ad insertion are also part of the cloud initiative, they said. Read more from Fred Dawson at Screenplays.

FCC Proposes Allowing Last Mile Priority Service

According to Multichannel News, a plan being circulated by the FCC concerning new network neutrality rules would allow for Internet content providers to negotiate with ISPs for enhanced last-mile service to Web users. The rules would establish a baseline of service above which negations could occur. Read more in John Eggerton's report.

Surveys Show Viewers Prefer Linear TV

Two surveys show that the vast majority of TV viewers still prefer to watch content as it's scheduled on their TV, as opposed to mobile or other streaming devices. While the numbers vary by region and demographic, they overwhelmingly tilt towards a preference towards linear (scheduled) TV. More on the two surveys from FierceCable.

IPv6 Transition Is Slow, But Growing

According to a study released by Incognito Software, most wired and wireless network operators have IPv6 transition plans underway, but just a small percentage of them are IPv6-ready. Incognito polled 51 cable, wireless and wireline operators from around the globe for its “IPv6 Readiness” survey, finding that about three quarters of the group are planning or actively transitioning to IPv6 as the pool of IPv4 addresses continues to run dry. But only 14% considered themselves IPv6-ready, while roughly 35% were in the planning stage, and 10% had not even started their transitions, according to the survey. More on the report

CableLabs To Aid SCTE In New Corporate Alliance Program

CableLabs, along with alliance members, will help to craft education and training programs highly tailored for employee functions and the emerging new technologies that they’re developing and deploying. For instance, the organization intends to help train workers for rollouts of such new cable technologies as DOCSIS 3.1, wireless, and IP video. More on the new program at Light Reading.
