LG Electronics Signs CableLabs Licenses for Two-Way Digital Cable Products
Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6, 2005 - LG Electronics, Inc. is taking a major step toward making interactive two-way digital cable products a retail reality by entering into agreements with CableLabs that will allow LG to implement OpenCable™ Application Platform (OCAP™)-compliant middleware on its interactive digital TVs (DTVs) and set-top boxes.
The agreements, available to any interested consumer electronics manufacturer, grant certain intellectual property rights required for building interactive devices in compliance with CableLabs' OpenCable™ hardware and software specifications.
"As an innovator in digital television technology, LG Electronics is well-positioned to help drive the interactive digital cable market in the U.S.," said Dr. Richard R. Green, President and CEO of CableLabs. LG has seen the value in moving forward with a strategy that places it at the forefront of the consumer electronics industry in terms of accelerating the digital transition. We're pleased that LG Electronics has taken the initiative to advance its DTVs to the next, two-way level so quickly."
"Next-generation consumer electronics products that access interactive digital cable services will represent both a tremendous benefit for consumers and a significant business opportunity for our retailers," said Dr. Hee-Gook Lee, Chief Technology Officer, LG Electronics. "Moving ahead with the OCAP agreement allows us to work closely with CableLabs and the North American cable industry on exciting interactive applications now, while continuing to work in parallel on the Interactive Digital Cable Ready technologies related to the future bi-directional plug-and-play digital cable standard."
CableLabs made the announcement after an executive signing ceremony during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) taking place this week in Las Vegas. CableLabs' Executive Committee was attending CES as part of its annual tour of the show to promote the advanced capabilities of the North American digital cable platform.
Brian L. Roberts, President and CEO of Comcast Corp. and Chairman of the CableLabs Board of Directors, commented: "The North American cable industry is very committed to OCAP, and to deploying interactive services through retail and leased digital devices. Leading consumer electronics companies such as LG can greatly help us and our customers by creating innovative and commercially viable products that access advanced cable services."
The new interactive devices will include an OCAP implementation, the middleware specification created by CableLabs for interactive applications. OCAP allows retail devices to run any OCAP application or service being delivered by a cable operator. With OCAP middleware, CE manufacturers can build digital cable products capable of running interactive program guides delivered by cable operators, as well as premium services like video-on-demand (VOD). The new devices also will include an interface for the CableCARD™ removable security module. CableCARDs encapsulate MSO-specific conditional access technology, thus enabling nationwide portability with advanced devices.
