CableLabs® Issues PacketCable™ Multimedia Specification
Louisville, Colorado, June 27, 2003—CableLabs® has issued the PacketCable™ Multimedia Specification and Technical Report, establishing a roadmap by which cable consumers may enjoy new advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based broadband services.
The Multimedia Specification foresees a wide variety of graphically-rich services such as interactive games and streaming media delivered via cables IP-based network. The multimedia-capable IP platform utilizes bandwidth reservations and quality-of-service features afforded by a PacketCable system running on a DOCSIS® 1.1 (Data over Cable Service Interface Specification) access network. As such, the Multimedia specifications build upon the work accomplished earlier by vendors implementing DOCSIS 1.1, DOCSIS 2.0, and PacketCable components.
This blueprint for delivery of multimedia services over cable is a great step for our industry in its quest to provide consumers with differentiated applications and features, said Comcast Corporation Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning Mark Coblitz. We are now in position to support a wide variety of IP-based services beyond voice communication, and that is exciting, Coblitz added.
Said Mike Lee, Vice President of Product Development at Rogers Cable Inc.: Cable is now positioned to tap into the excitement that our team saw when we recently visited the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Consumers of interactive games would be well served playing their favorite game over our broadband networks, added Lee, a member of the PacketCable Business Team.
