Q: What is CableLabs?
A: CableLabs is a research and development consortium of cable television system operators worldwide. CableLabs plans and funds research and development projects that help cable companies take advantage of future opportunities and meet future challenges in the cable television industry. CableLabs also acts as a clearinghouse to provide information on current and prospective technological developments that are of interest to the cable industry. CableLabs maintains additional Web sites at www.cablenet.org and www.tru2way.com.

Q: How does a company become a member?
A: To be one of our Member Companies, a company must be a cable television system operator (as defined by the Cable Act). A cable operator, as defined by the Cable Act, is a person or persons who provide(s) video programming using closed transmission paths and uses public rights-of-way. This definition does not include open video systems, MMDS (multichannel, multipoint, distribution systems) or DBS, (direct broadcast satellite).

Q: Who does CableLabs serve?
A: On behalf of its unique cable operator membership, CableLabs works with and provides services to companies offering products, services, technologies and digital content to the cable industry.

Q: How is CableLabs funded?
A: CableLabs is funded primarily by our membership dues.

Q: How long has CableLabs been in business?
A: CableLabs was founded in 1988 (see the CableLabs History information).

Q: How is the Board of Directors structured?
A: CableLabs' governance includes:

  • Board of Directors, comprised of CableLabs member CEOs, elected by member companies.
  • Executive Committee, appointed by the Board of Directors.
  • Technical Advisory Committee, which includes one representative per member company.


Q: How does the company fit into the ever-changing telecommunications market?
A: CableLabs is an integral piece of the telecommunications market as the research and development that occurs at CableLabs influences and, in many cases, drives the direction of the industry.

Q: As an employee, would I have high visibility within the cable/telecommunications community?
A: We are an industry leader and, as such, many opportunities exist to work with top-level executives in the telecommunications industry. In fact, we expect our employees to assume a visible profile among our members and in the vendor community.

Q: How large is the company?
A: CableLabs has approximately 160 employees and an on-site population of visiting engineers and consultants. We are a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, including a vast range of skills and experience, yet we are inclusive and connected by a strong organization.

Q: Does the company support training and development?
A: Yes. The Company encourages professional development at all levels of the organization. We have a tuition reimbursement policy for job-related educational expenses. We also cover the cost of many job-related seminars and conferences. Additionally, there are multiple opportunities to broaden your knowledge with in-house training offerings.
